WHAT IF MY INTERNET GOES DOWN?

Since we use HomeSeer, all automation is performed offline and in your home. Any changes to your system away from your home will require an internet connection, but the automation does not.

For example, if we set up your system to turn off the thermostat when a window is opened for 5 minutes, that will still happen as long as there is power to the home even if there is no internet connection.

 

WHAT IS THE SECURITY RISK OF HOME AUTOMATION?

In general, home automation yields a low-security risk, and we do what we can to reduce any potential uncertainty for you and your guests. 

To increase your security, all connections to your automation software are encrypted so anyone with access to your Wi-Fi cannot read information sent to the system. To prevent theft of the devices, our Premium and Supreme packages also include a physical enclosure with a lock to cover your required hubs. You will even know if a device leaves your network and appears offline.

Your guest’s data is also protected because any information about their use of technology is only accessible to anyone with the login credentials for your HomeSeer account.

 

CAN YOU INSTALL A SMART LOCK IN MY HOME?

(Refer to the last paragraph of this answer to learn about the advantages of smart locks)

Yes, we can install smart locks, and we recommend them for vacation rental owners. The reason smart locks are not in the pre-made packages is that they are often not allowed in condos, and our packages are tailored to one-bedroom apartments. If your condo board will at least allow a small keypad outside your door, we recommend and can install the August Smart Lock Pro. August will enable you to keep the same look on the outside of your door and the same key. Condo boards appreciate this because the master key will allow property managers to access the unit if needed.

A smart lock with a keypad increases security better than any other smart device. Installing a smart lock means you eliminate key exchanges and prevent your keys from being copied or lost. Guests will now use a small keypad to lock and unlock the door with a password that is unique to them. When the guest leaves the rental, they will never be able to reaccess it because their code will expire.

 

ARE THERE ANY MONTHLY FEES?

Automatic Homes Toronto and most of its products do not charge monthly or annual fees. The only common additional costs in our packages are for NoiseAware, who charges USD $99 annually.
